What Does "Fully Chelated" Mean on a Magnesium Label?

It means the magnesium is bonded to an amino acid, glycine in the case of magnesium glycinate, rather than sitting in the capsule as a simple mineral salt. "Bisglycinate" is the more precise name: two glycine molecules per magnesium ion.

What it does not mean is anything a regulator has defined. Neither FSSAI in India, nor EU food law, nor US supplement law sets a legal standard for "chelated" or "fully chelated". The phrase on the front of a jar is marketing language, not a certified claim.

What chelation actually does

A chelate wraps the mineral in an organic molecule. For magnesium bisglycinate, two glycine molecules bind the magnesium ion in a ring structure. The practical consequences are reasonably well established:

  • It is gentle on the stomach. This is the clearest advantage and the reason most people who take magnesium daily prefer it.
  • It limits interference in the gut. The bond reduces interaction with other compounds competing for uptake.
  • You get the glycine too. Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter with its own modest sleep-related effects, so the carrier is not inert filler.

What chelation does not do is multiply absorption several times over. In the one randomised trial comparing magnesium bisglycinate with magnesium oxide directly, absorption was similar in most participants, with the chelate ahead only in people whose absorption was impaired. Better tolerated, yes. Dramatically better absorbed, no.

Why the phrase is unpoliced

Because no legal definition exists, a label can say "fully chelated" or "100% chelated" while the capsule contains a blend of chelate and a simple magnesium salt. Nothing in the wording itself prevents that. There is no certifying body, no minimum chelation ratio in law, and no required test.

This is not a hypothetical gap. Products marketed as fully chelated that were found to contain undeclared magnesium oxide have led to a recall in Canada and class action settlements in the United States.

The number that is checkable

Where the words are unregulated, the arithmetic is not. Magnesium bisglycinate has a molar mass of 172.42 g/mol against magnesium's 24.305 g/mol, which fixes its magnesium content at 14.1% by weight, at most. Hydrated commercial grades assay lower, roughly 11 to 13%.

So divide the elemental magnesium by the compound weight. If the result exceeds 14.1%, the product contains magnesium from a second, denser source, whatever the front of the jar says. Magnesium oxide, at about 60.3% magnesium by weight, is the usual one.

What a trustworthy label looks like

  1. It gives an elemental magnesium figure. Not just the compound weight. Without it you cannot dose or verify anything.
  2. It names every magnesium source in the ingredient list. One source or two, declared either way.
  3. Its arithmetic matches its wording. A "fully chelated" claim and a figure above 14.1% cannot both be true.
  4. It has a third-party assay behind it. With the caveat below.

One thing lab reports cannot tell you

A total-magnesium test confirms the milligrams are present. It cannot tell you which magnesium forms they came from, because digestion in the laboratory reduces every form to the same ion before the instrument measures it. So a NABL or equivalent report proving "121 mg of magnesium" is genuine evidence of quantity and no evidence at all about chelation.

Identifying the actual forms needs a different test: solubility behaviour, nitrogen content, or X-ray diffraction. Otherwise the ingredient declaration and the supplier's certificate of analysis are what you are relying on.
