Is Magnesium Oxide Really Only 4% Absorbed?

Almost certainly not. The 4% figure traces to a single urinary-excretion study from 2001 that tested commercial magnesium preparations, did not test magnesium glycinate at all, and whose own authors concluded that inorganic salts can match organic ones depending on the preparation.

In the one randomised trial comparing magnesium bisglycinate against magnesium oxide head to head, absorption was similar in most participants. The chelate led only in people whose absorption was impaired, and it was better tolerated by everyone.

How one number became an internet fact

The claim is repeated in almost every article comparing magnesium forms, usually without a citation, and often stated as though it were a settled constant. It is not. It comes from one small study using urinary magnesium excretion as its proxy for absorption, a method that captures what the kidney clears rather than what the gut took up.

Two things get lost when the figure is quoted. First, glycinate was never in that comparison, so the study cannot support any statement about glycinate versus oxide. Second, the authors themselves were more cautious than the people quoting them, noting that preparation and formulation matter more than the organic or inorganic label.

What the better evidence shows

Magnesium absorption is genuinely hard to measure. There is no simple blood test for magnesium status, because most of the body's magnesium sits in bone and inside cells rather than in serum. Studies rely on isotope tracers, urinary excretion, or red blood cell magnesium, and they disagree with each other.

What can be said with reasonable confidence:

  • Fractional absorption falls as the dose rises. This is true of every form. Splitting a daily amount absorbs a greater share of it than one large dose.
  • Solubility helps, but is not the whole story. Highly soluble forms such as citrate do well, yet solubility alone does not predict retention.
  • Differences between forms are smaller than marketing implies. Where head-to-head trials exist, the gaps are modest rather than multiples.
  • Tolerability differs a great deal. This is the most consistent and practically useful difference between forms.

So why choose glycinate at all?

There are good reasons, and they are not the 4% claim.

  1. You can take it every day without gut consequences. A supplement you abandon after a fortnight delivers nothing, whatever its absorption figure.
  2. Glycine comes with it. An inhibitory neurotransmitter with its own modest role in sleep, which magnesium oxide does not provide.
  3. It is better in people who absorb poorly. The one head-to-head trial found exactly this subgroup effect.

Those are honest advantages. They do not require inventing a tenfold absorption gap.

Where magnesium oxide genuinely falls short

Oxide's real weakness is tolerability at the doses used to correct a deficiency. It is the form most likely to cause loose stools, which is precisely why it works as a laxative and an antacid. If your entire daily magnesium dose is oxide, you may well notice.

What it is not is illegitimate. Magnesium oxide is a permitted magnesium source in India, the European Union, Canada and the United States, and at about 60.3% magnesium by weight it is by a wide margin the densest form on the shelf. That density is why it appears in buffered chelate blends, where it raises the magnesium per capsule while the quantity involved stays far below laxative territory.

The practical takeaway

Choose magnesium glycinate because you intend to take magnesium daily and want to do so comfortably, and because the glycine is worth having. Do not choose it because you have been told the alternative is 96% wasted. That claim rests on one study that never tested the comparison being made.
