Scientific papers

Published research is not a test of this finished product. Study doses are context, not directions for use.

  • Lopresti, Smith & Drummond (2026) — systematic review of oral magnesium and sleep

Finding: A systematic review of 12 randomised controlled trials of oral magnesium taken for sleep outcomes in adults.

Limitations: Results across the trials were inconsistent and the authors rated the certainty of the evidence as low to very low. They did not support oral magnesium as a routine treatment for insomnia.

Relevance to this pack: The included trials used varied magnesium formulations and doses, were not compared against each other, and none of them tested HealthyHey Magnesium Glycinate 22% (121 mg elemental magnesium, buffered). This review is background on the ingredient, not a test of this pack.

  • Schuster and colleagues (2025) — randomised controlled trial of magnesium bisglycinate in adults with poor sleep

Finding: A randomised controlled trial in 155 adults with poor sleep, giving 250 mg elemental magnesium a day as magnesium bisglycinate for four weeks.

Limitations: The change in self-reported insomnia severity against placebo was modest (a small effect), and sleep was not measured objectively.

Relevance to this pack: It used a different magnesium form and a higher daily elemental dose than this product, and was not a trial of the HealthyHey 22% blend or of this 120-capsule pack.

22% or 14% — which format?

Both formats declare 121 mg elemental magnesium per their labelled servings. What differs is how many capsules that labelled serving is.

  • Magnesium Glycinate 22% — this 120-capsule pack 121 mg elemental magnesium per 1-capsule labelled serving
  • Magnesium Glycinate 14% 121 mg elemental magnesium per 2-capsule labelled serving

These are different formulations. Equal labelled elemental magnesium does not establish equal absorption, and this comparison does not say either format is better. Check the label of the exact pack you buy.

Why Magnesium Glycinate?

Magnesium glycinate binds each magnesium ion to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. In the one published human trial that compared them head to head, magnesium bisglycinate was absorbed about as well as magnesium oxide in most people, better in those whose absorption was impaired, and was better tolerated by everyone in the study.

Magnesium Forms — At a Glance
Form Magnesium by weight Absorption Tolerance
Glycinate (bisglycinate) 14.1% maximum Well absorbed; part of it appears to travel intact through a peptide transport route Gentle; the best tolerated form in the trial that compared it with oxide
Citrate 16.2% Well absorbed, soluble Mildly laxative at higher doses
Oxide 60.3% Lower per single dose than soluble organic salts, but clearly raises body magnesium over weeks Well tolerated at supplement doses; laxative only at gram-level doses

What Magnesium Does in the Body

Magnesium is an essential mineral and a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems. It is involved in normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal muscle function, normal functioning of the nervous system, electrolyte balance, and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

ICMR-NIN (2020) sets the recommended dietary allowance at 440 mg a day for adult men and 370 mg for adult women, counting all sources including food. One capsule contributes 121 mg toward that total.

How to Take

Take 1 capsule daily with a meal, or as directed by a healthcare professional. Not to exceed the recommended daily usage.

Store in a cool, dry, dark place after opening. Not to exceed the recommended daily usage. If you are pregnant or lactating, prone to any food allergy, or under any medical condition, consult your healthcare professional before using the product. Keep out of reach of children.

High-dose calcium Competes with magnesium for absorption 2 to 3 hours apart
Iron supplements Absorption of both can be reduced Take iron earlier, magnesium later
High-dose zinc Can interfere with magnesium absorption 2 to 3 hours apart
Antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones) Magnesium binds them and reduces their absorption 2 to 4 hours apart
Bisphosphonates Reduced absorption of the medicine Several hours apart
Levothyroxine Reduced absorption of the medicine Thyroid medicine in the morning, magnesium later

If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide?

Magnesium glycinate is a chelate: each magnesium ion is bound to two glycine molecules, and part of it appears to be absorbed intact through a peptide transport route. Magnesium oxide is a simple, far denser salt, around 60% magnesium by weight against about 14% for bisglycinate. In the one human trial that compared the two directly, absorption was similar in most participants, the chelate was ahead in those with impaired absorption, and the chelate was better tolerated. Both are permitted magnesium sources in India, the EU, Canada and the United States.

Can I take magnesium glycinate every day?

Yes. Magnesium glycinate is well tolerated for daily long-term use. ICMR-NIN recommends 370 to 440 mg of elemental magnesium daily for adults from all sources. Each capsule provides 121 mg, well within safe daily limits. Speak to your doctor first if you have reduced kidney function, since the kidney is how the body clears excess magnesium.

When is the best time to take it?

Any time that you will remember consistently. Taking it with a meal rather than on an empty stomach improves absorption slightly. Many people prefer the evening as part of a wind-down routine.

Is HealthyHey Magnesium Glycinate FSSAI approved?

Yes. HealthyHey Magnesium Glycinate 121mg holds product-specific FSSAI approval under the FSS (Approval for Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients) Regulations, 2017 — Form II, F. No. 72/Std/PA/FSSAI/2020, dated 3 August 2021 — a separate step beyond the manufacturer's licence that most supplements rely on alone. HealthyHey also manufactures under FSSAI Central Licence No. 10018022008319 in a GMP, ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 certified facility. Every batch is tested by an NABL-accredited laboratory; scan the QR code on the label or email us for the report.

Is this supplement suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

Yes. It uses plant-based HPMC veg capsules with no gelatin or animal-derived ingredients, and is free from gluten, soy and dairy.

550 mg vs 121 mg — which number matters?

The 550 mg is the labelled magnesium formulation amount per capsule; 121 mg is the elemental magnesium per one-capsule serving. Compare elemental magnesium on the same labelled-serving basis.

  • As per information available on different websites, daily dosage for Magnesium Glycinate for an adult should be 420 MG and this product has 550 MG per serving. Its also mentioned that taking excess dosage can have side effects in the long run. Please suggest if its safe to take 550 MG Daily

The 550 mg mentioned on our Magnesium Glycinate label refers to the total amount of Magnesium Glycinate compound, not the elemental magnesium content. Each serving provides 121 mg of elemental magnesium, which is well within the recommended daily intake for adults. Therefore, the product is safe for daily use when taken as per the recommended usage mentioned on the label. Taking higher doses than recommended is not advised unless prescribed by a healthcare professional.

  • Any side effect

Magnesium glycinate is generally well-tolerated by most people and is considered to have fewer side effects compared to other forms of magnesium, which can cause gastrointestinal issues. However, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as nausea, stomach upset or diarrhea, particularly when taken in high doses. Magnesium glycinate is often taken as a supplement to support relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being. It may indirectly support sleep quality by promoting relaxation and easing muscle tension.

Melatonin: Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body's pineal gland. It regulates sleep-wake cycles and it is known to help with sleep disorders such as insomnia or to adjust sleep patterns due to jet lag or shift work.

If you're considering supplements alongside your current medications (NEXITO for anxiety and clonazepam for sleep), it's important to discuss them with your doctor. Open communication ensures they can advise you on safety, interactions and suitability based on your health status. Additionally, people with kidney problems should be cautious with magnesium glycinate because it is excreted through the kidneys and can build up in those with impaired kidney function.
